For the past year, I worked both as a special educator at a private school and as a coordinator of communications for the South Asia Hub of AsiaCMS, but I continually felt there was a change that God would bring soon. Early in January 2023, the opportunity to attend the Asia Gateway Training (AGT) programme as part of AsiaCMS was set before me. A part of me was quite unsettled at how little I felt I knew about what it entailed, but there was an even greater part that was thrilled with excitement to learn new things and to grow. All I knew was that God had an adventure in store for me and that AGT was a part of that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

     Arriving in Malaysia, I wondered what it would be like to get to know people from so many places over the next month. There were 11 countries represented, and yet, it was beautiful to connect with each person, not by putting aside differences of language, culture, or even denomination, but by embracing them and learning about the beauty in each. The stories of lives that unfold are so starkly different from anything that I have ever known, and yet the love of Christ connects us. Each one is unique and impactful in its own right.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

     We visited Xia and Hindu temples, which gave me many things to ponder regarding my faith and the beliefs that others of these faiths might hold\u2014questions, in part, and responses, in part.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

     Together, in the classes, we have journeyed through conversations about having differing perspectives stemming from our differing contexts, how one might attempt to enter a culture while being acutely aware that one can never become a true part of another\u2019s culture, and understanding that mission is not simply the work one does but the life that is lived. The classes themselves were often focused on the practical application of the concepts discussed in our contexts. This, though not always easy to think through hypothetically, helped make the theory understandable and adaptable. It allowed for and reminded us to be creative because God\u2019s purpose has never been and probably will never be \u2018one size fits all\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

     This process of reading, sharing stories, discussing differences and similarities, and growing alongside each of the participants has been a privilege. Diversity brings a powerful discourse that cannot be replicated in the homogeneity of any one country or people group. It also builds relationships and partnerships that will last beyond the four weeks that participants spend together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

     Over my time here, I know I have changed in more ways than I am yet to identify, and what God has in store for each of us here is far beyond anything we can imagine. I am grateful for the opportunity to be a part of this journey, and I pray that I may learn all that He wants me to.
