Final Report \u2013 12 May 2020<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nayagaun Church in Pokhara hosted a two-week condensed version of the Asia Gateway Mission Training Course 5-20 March 2020.  It is understood that this is the first time the Asia Gateway Course has been offered in Nepal.  Two members of Nayagaun Church had completed the Course in Malaysia in the past few years and others had enquired about also doing the Course.  It was felt to be more efficient to bring 4 lecturers to Nepal than to take a large number of Nepalese to do the course in Malaysia.  The Course ran 6 days\/week from 9am to 5pm.  There were no assignments or exams.  The Course was taught in English with no translation.  Discussion in table groups was in Nepali and points that were not understood were explained by students who had stronger English.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

19 Nepalese enrolled in the Course;14 Men and 5 women, 11 from Pokhara and 8 from outside Pokhara; 7 were members of Nayagaun Church. Ages ranged from 19 to 62.  All were involved in Christian leadership; some full-time, but no pastors were represented.  There was an effort made to attract students from beyond Nepal to diversify the cohort, but no students from outside of Nepal were able to come.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The training was held at Nayagaun church in Pokhara.  All the Pokhara based students commuted from home while the students from out of Pokhara stayed in guest rooms at the church (men) and one girl stayed with the church pastor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

4 lecturers from Asia Gateway conducted the training on the following topics:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Dr Clouston travelled from India and the other three lecturers are based in Malaysia.  Due to the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, Dr Nam Chen was not able to travel, so he delivered his subject by video conference platform.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    A nominal registration fee of NPR 3,000\/- for individuals and NPR 6,000\/- for organisations was charged.  All meals were prepared at Nayagaun Church\u2019s kitchen (basic Nepali menu) and served at no additional charge and accommodation was provided for the non-Pokhara students free of charge.  Most of the non-Pokhara students claimed back their bus fares.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    All the lecturers generously gave their time to teach their material at no cost and were able to get funding for their travel costs.  The cost of accommodation at the nearby INF guesthouse at Green Pastures Hospital for the lecturers was covered from the Course budget.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The cost of the religious exposure and integral mission visits was also covered from the Course budget.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    CMS Australia\u2019s Mission Support Fund generously provided a grant of AUD 5,000\/-.  The committee was able to economise on most of the budgeted items and the course finished with a surplus of NPR 100,000 \/-.  CMS Australia will be offered a refund of this amount or other options for it to be used locally for furthering the work of the Gospel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Feedback from the students was all positive and most of the students fund the content of the Course helpful and stimulating.  Some of the main comments \/ suggestions were:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      \n
    1. Many students struggled to understand the English and it was suggested that in future, either a translator be used, or the Course be taught in Nepali.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    2. 2 weeks was too short to cover all the material, but it was also difficult for students to make themselves available for this long.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    3. The course content could be further condensed and contextualised or be split and delivered in two or more units of shorter duration.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

      The organising committee found it hard to attract applicants because of the long duration and the fact that it was offered in English medium.  Most church leaders are of an age that their education was not in English, so they are not confident to attempt English medium courses.  Many younger people have studied in English medium at school however, they are not confident in English and often struggle to understand different accents.  Theological concepts and language are also a limitation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      The committee wishes to record its sincere appreciation to all who generously contributed to make the Course a success.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
